CFP Apprenticeship Program

By Antoan Tripp posted 07-17-2015 09:44

To all, The CFP work experience accepts two years of being an apprentice under a certified financial planner as acceptable work experience. Can anyone offer any guidance or reccomdations on how I would be able to apply for or get involved in such a program? I don't have any experience in the financial industry. The will be the most challenging component for me in meeting all the prerequisites for the CFP designation. I am located in the Fresno, CA area.

A CFP candidate was referred to me by a client. She did financial planning work with me a few hours a week as an unpaid intern for one year. We worked together really well and her competence and learning curve were terrific, so she just started working for me full time a few weeks ago.
It may be worth your while to contact financial planners and look for part time intern experience opportunities that could lead to full time work. Try to get a meeting so you could discuss how you could potentially help each other or so they could simply give you some tips on a career path. Showing that you are able to reach out to connect with a new person is a great first impression and it's a very important skill for a financial planner.

We might be able to help.
I can make time for a call next week to discuss.

I would try to connect with local CFPs in the area - if they're not looking for new advisors then they might know who is. If that fails - look at "New Planner Recruiter". They specialize in getting new advisors matched with existing firms and might be able to advise on this apprenticeship process.

It sounds like you do not currently work for a CFP. I can relate to your situation as I am also transitioning into a new career myself out of IT support.
It's my understanding that you will need a new job working for a CFP in order to fulfill the requirements of the work experience component of the designation.
That is why I am looking for new job opportunities in San Diego, CA so that when I finish my classes, I will already be working in the industry.
I am actively searching for opportunities now and am focused on fee-only advisors because their work is most aligned with my values and personality.
