Guest speakers Rob Myatt and Christopher Zook will be presenting, "Demystifying Oil and Gas Investments: Uncovering the Tax Benefits and Hidden Truth."

This session will discuss the tax issues and treatment surrounding the consideration of investing in the oil and gas space, including the associated tax advantages as well as uncovering some of the myths.

  1. Common structuring including MLPs, private-equity backed partnerships, friends and family deals, and turnkey offerings and the economic realities between the deals
  2. Discussion on a GP vs LP interest as well as non-passive vs. passive treatment
  3. Types of investment and Associated Tax Treatment – Working Interest vs. Royalty/Mineral Interest vs. Midstream
  4. Tax Incentive - Including acceleration of deductions and depletion
  5. Deciphering a K-1
Rob Myatt, Partner-in-Charge, Oil and Gas Services with Weaver, has a decade of public accounting experience with a practice concentration in consulting and compliance for partnerships, corporations, individuals, and state/local income tax. He has extensive experience in the areas of energy (oil & gas upstream/midstream), manufacturing, service professionals, multi-state issues, and high-net-worth individuals. In addition, he has significant experience with preparation and review of income tax provision work papers. Rob is an active member of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is also an active member of the Council of Petroleum Accountants Society (COPAS) and the Young Professionals in Energy of Dallas. Rob holds a master of science in tax accounting and a bachelor of business administration in accounting, both from Texas Tech University.

Christopher Zook is the Founder, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of CAZ Investments. With nearly 30 years of experience investing in both traditional and alternative asset classes, he is a regular contributor to major media outlets, including CNBC, Fox Business and Bloomberg.

Christopher is actively involved in public policy and frequently serves as a resource to state and local officials. Most recently, Governor Greg Abbott appointed Christopher to the State of Texas Pension Review Board, where he was also selected to serve as the Chair of the Investments Committee, after he helped find a solution to Houston’s pension crisis that resulted in the city’s most sweeping public pension reform of the last 40 years.

He also serves on the Board of Trustees for Guidestone Financial, which is the $15 Billion investment arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, which provides pensions, insurance and retirement plans for pastors, missionaries and church staff nationwide. He recently served two terms as a member of the Greater Houston Partnership’s Executive Committee and is a past President of the “C” Club of Houston.

Prior to starting CAZ Investments in 2001, Christopher served in senior leadership positions with Oppenheimer, Prudential Securities, Lehman Brothers and Paine Webber. A lifelong Houstonian, he is a graduate of Texas Tech University where he was recently honored as a Distinguished Alumni. Christopher is former Vice-Chairman of the Deacons and serves on the Finance Committee at Second Baptist Church. He has held leadership positions on a variety of charitable boards, including his current role on the board of Elizabeth Ruth’s Home, an organization helping adults with autism. He previously served as President of the Board of Trustees of Avondale House and President of The Children’s Fund.
