When:  Jan 20, 2021 from 10:00 to 11:00 (ET)

The January 2021 International & Cross-Border Knowledge Circle will be held on Wednesday, January 20th at 10 am ET.

Ashley Murphy will be joining us again as guest speaker and will be presenting, "The Strengths and Drawbacks of the US Financial System the International Financial Advisor Should Understand."

With more than 8 million Americans living abroad, more than 30 million individuals born overseas living legally in the US, and tens of millions of other passing through the US annually on non-immigrant visas, it is important for the international financial advisor to understand the relative strengths and drawbacks of the US financial system so as to better advise their globally mobile clients. The US dollar is still the world's reserve currency and enjoys benefits tied to this, it has largest and most liquid financial markets, a diverse and deep range of financial product and service offerings, it is ranked as #1 by Morningstar for investor friendliness, and offers one of the best places in the world to be wealthy given the diversity of offerings in practically every domain. On the other hand, the US is alone amongst developed countries in taxing its citizens on the basis of citizenship and not residency, it imposes steep penalties and onerous reporting requirements to stay tax compliant, it has a byzantine tax system that surprises many middle income foreigners who realize the US is not as low a tax environment as what they might have thought. It has the most expensive healthcare system in the world where the provision of care is largely tied to employment, it offers bewildering array of educational choices with the quality offerings amongst the more expensive options globally. Aside from Social Security, the primary retirement savings option is to the discretion of one's employer. Please join us as we go on a wide ranging exploration of the pros and cons of the US financial system.
