From Research to Practice: Working with Underserved Populations

The October Financial Counseling call with the AFCPE will be held on Thursday, October 18th at 12 PM ET.  Guest speaker, Katherine Mielitz will be presenting, "From Research to Practice: Working with Underserved Populations."

As Accredited Financial Counselors (AFC®) and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERS (CFP®) seek opportunities to Bridge the Gap between professions, service to the community and exploring strategies to provide a hand-up (not a hand-out) become even more relevant. Service-minded AFC®s and CFP®s have opportunities around the country to provide quality, non-sales based financial literacy training to underserved populations.

This webinar will introduce participants to working with families experiencing homelessness, discuss the very early steps of research that is being pursued regarding the financial capability and training of families experiencing homelessness, and add to the discussion on recent and upcoming research in working with incarcerated populations.

Katherine (Kate) S. Mielitz, PhD, AFC® is an Assistant Professor at Oklahoma State University in Family Financial Planning. Dr. Mielitz’s research area of interest brings attention to the need of qualified financial professionals to provide a hand-up to incarcerated men and women approaching release back into society. Her dissertation explored post-release financial intentions of returning offenders, and she has published articles in the Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning (JFCP) and Corrections. Dr. Mielitz’s work has been instrumental in bridging the gap between family financial planning and the criminal justice areas of study. Prior to her position at Oklahoma State University, Dr. Mielitz worked as the Director for Financial Counseling and Planning at Family Promise of the Mid-Willamette Valley in Salem, OR.
